Optimising ion exchange column operation - Efficient removal of brine after regeneration
Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) was used to simulate ion exchange regeneration with brine. Brine wash out could be optimised, shortening the cycle time. Project together with Evides industriewater (Netherlands).

Curing dead zones in lower part column
Brine removal after resin regeneration was calculated and optimised. The density of the brine solution is much higher than that of water. In the original configuration, brine severely interfered during operation after regeneration. Different geometrical adaptations were tested. The period of salt flushing out could be significantly shortened.

Major findings
- Lower part of column contained dead zones
- Brine washed out slowly during normal operation
- The implemented geometrical improvements significantly lowered the impact of brine
